Justice MSR Rao sworn in as CJ of Jharkhand HC

Justice MS Ramachandra Rao was sworn in as new Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court on Wednesday.  Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar administered the oath of office to Justice Rao at a function held at Raj Bhavan in Ranchi. Chief Minister Hemant Soren, his cabinet colleagues, several judges and senior government officials attended the swearing-in ceremony. Acting Chief Justice Sujit Narayan Prasad were present along with other judges and top bureaucrats of the State. Justice Rao was earlier the Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court. The Central Government issued a notification transferring Justice Rao from the Himachal Pradesh High Court to Jharkhand on September 21. His transfer came days after the Jharkhand government moved the Supreme Court against the BJP-led Centre for not implementing the apex court collegiums recommendation to send Justice Rao to head the state high court. Rao who comes from Jurist family was born on 07.08.1966 in Hyderabad, Justice Rao studied B.Sc.(Hons.)(Mathematics) from Bhavans New Science College, Osmania University. He passed LL.B. from the University College of Law, Osmania University, Hyderabad in 1989. He was awarded the CVSS Acharyulu Gold Medal by the Osmania University for securing the highest marks in the final year LL.B. He enrolled as an Advocate on 07.09.1989. He secured LL.M. from the University of Cambridge U.K. in 1991. His father Justice M. Jagannadha Rao was a former Judge of The Supreme Court of India (1997-2000) and former Chairman of Law Commission of India. His grandfather M.S. Ramachandra Rao was also a Judge of The High Court of Andhra Pradesh from 1960-1961. Justice M.S. Ramachandra Rao was elevated as Addl. Judge of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh on 29.06.2012. He was appointed as Judge of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh and assumed charge as such on 04.12.2013. He was appointed to perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice, High Court for the State of Telangana w.e.f. 31.08.2021 forenoon. He was transferred as judge of Punjab and Haryana high courts in October 2021 and later to Himachal Pradesh High Court.
